Enamelling Terra Cotta
The process of enamelling is done by putting one or more layers of finely grounded coloured glass on a terracotta tile called “biscuit”. The glass is changed into enamel when cooked. Before putting the enamel on the tiles it is suspended in water. The “biscuit” absorbs the water and the enamel remains on the surface of the tile : depending on the desired result, enamelling is done by spraying (by hand using a spray gun), or partially mechanically, by covering, pouring on with a ladle or by steeping. The cooking temperature is between 950° and 1000° and produces a lot of different colours and aspects.
